The real work experience aims to open design graduates' eyes to the opportunities of using their skills beyond the usual design roles and the possibility of working in the public sector. Concurrently, the programme aims to educate public sector bodies on the skills and value designers can bring to their organisations.
Thanks for your notes Alison, from NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement
Notes from ‘professionals’ table
Designers can bring the following skills to public sector - Fresh eyes - Focus - Vibrancy - Attention to detail - Communication in a tangible way
- Problem is in the word design – more meaningful term to public sector would be ‘ to make things better and more user-centred’.
- Space between graphic design and information design is huge.
- Best project has been based on good relationships.
- Need to educate the client.
- Need to recognize the commercial opportunities.
- Giving up some autonomy for a designer can be a struggle. Experience in the public sector gets people out of this as they need to fit into a wider structure.
- Difference between ‘design thinking’ and the ‘craft of design’. Public sector needs both.
- Design process is immersive.
- Designers tend to design for what they see which is not innovation necessarily.
- They need tangible outputs which is understandable given they have to show their worth.
