social design course

In response to Deborah’s prompt of ‘What would/could a social design course include?’ This is a potential outcome I’m really excited about and I would be interested to hear from students/graduates/designers and professionals what such a course might involve.

If a course existed that helped bridge the gap between design and public sector, I see it as a space and environment where:

- designers are taught about the public sector.

- designers learn to see their skills in a different light, and learn to adapt them into other sectors.

- designers would take their ideas beyond the creative industries.

- designers start sharing/applying their thought processes to outside areas.

- professionals share successful case studies of projects that use design in different ways.

-professionals from the public sector and designers are able to brainstorm the opportunities of how and where collaboration can be successful.

What other aspects need to be covered within this course and how could the course exist?

as an aside; it would be great if this course was available to disillusioned graphic designers who might want to work in this area of design. i would be first in the queue!

perhaps this course could be in the form of an MA? this would allow students to study design in a more general sense first via a degree or HND-then specialise?

i think a course like this would be fantastic and i think there is so much scope for it, especially to bridge the gap between designers and working in the public sector. Personally I think an intensive course run by a design consultancy and a group of proffesionals working within the public sector would be good. I think this would be more beneficial than an Ma solely taught at a university as you would be working directly with people who were specific to this area and getting “real life experience”. I also think it would be far more exciting and engaging for everyone!and it would be a completely different experience to what graduates will have already experienced at university!

Add to the course curriculum

- what makes a community

- what are the ways in which designers can and might work with communities

- how is design perceived by people

- how is design perceived by professionals, other than those working in design

- how can and might design interface with communities and society

- what are some of the best techniques to engage people with design

For me, a valuable part of this course could be the help to really get into the problem space, in ways that are currently difficult to achieve in short spaces of time.

For example, quite simply working in the appropriate department/ service centre for a short period as part of the research phase. I have tried to do this before as part of my university projects and found it difficult to sort out in the few weeks I had. Having an established link with ‘client’ services that students would be doing live projects for would be great experience.

I also think it might aid the students’ understanding of the public sector in general, how a service currently works and the obstacles facing it. I would also feel more engaged with the people and confident in the suitability of my design outcomes.
